ExhibitionCommunity Archives Wales works with groups within Communities First areas across Wales to create digital community archives. These are collections of material in private hands that have been digitised and interpreted by community groups, enabling the communities to present their own history in their own words.
Community Archives Wales has brought together individuals from different age and language groups, giving them pride in their local heritage and a shared sense of identity. The project also contributes to the regeneration of disadvantaged communities by providing participants with valuable IT skills which increase employability and give a sense of empowerment.
Over the past year, the groups, with the help of our Project Officers, Richard, Paul, Siân and Stefan, have been placing their history online and the website, www.ourwales.org.uk, now holds over 2,000 images, with more being added each week.
Visit the Hafan to learn a little more about the 11 groups, from the Scouts in Troedyrhiw to the ladies of Bonymaen and the rural communities of Nantlle and Cwm Ystywyth. Have a look at the website on our kiosk and see the fruits of their labour over the past year.
